Only 12 miles from Edinburgh, in a pastoral valley, the twin towered Keep that is Borthwick Castle, stands on the summit of a knoll on the periphery of the romantic Scottish Borders.
Built in 1430, the castle is one of the most important historic buildings in Scotland. Its rich history has meant it was once the refuge of Mary Queen of Scots and the Earl of Bothwell, and a century later was besieged by Oliver Cromwell in 1650. The castle walls still bear the scars caused by the bombardment of Cromwells cannon.

For over 550 years, Borthwick Castle has stood defiant, majestic, indestructible - a living tribute to the skill of the great craftsmen who built this impressive and massive stone edifice. Today, you will find the atmosphere and grandeur of its romantic past have been lovingly cherished and maintained

The maximum number of guests permitted is 65 seated guests for the wedding breakfast and reception

You can choose for your wedding ceremony to take place either in the castle's own Chapel or in the nearby Borthwick Church, which dates back to the 11th century. The church is situated at the entrance to the castle.

The castle's Great Hall can cater for parties of approx. 65 people for your wedding reception. Exclusive use of the castle's facilities can be arranged for wedding parties.
There are ten bedchambers within the castle and it is possible to hire the castle exclusively for your big day.

All the bedchambers, tastefully furnished in period style, have showers and toilets en-suite; the bedchambers, once occupied by the tragic Queen and the ill-fated Bothwell, have four poster beds and are available to guests.


Twentieth century amenities and central heating have been introduced without obtruding upon the medieval ambience which never fails to enchant even the most sophisticated of travellers.
Guests will wonder at the miracle of the stone mason's art embodied in the spiral staircases, the fourteen foot thickness of the walls and the magnificent twin towers which stand 100 feet high from the dungeons to the battlements.
